What are Paraben’s?!

Hey guys!

I always have clients asking me what are Paraben’s? so i thought i would share with you what i know..

Paraben’s are a controversial preservative used in cosmetics, they prevent the growth of bacteria and are easily absorbed into the skin.

Paraben’s are controversial because they are suspected of being “Endocrine Disruptors” these are chemicals that can have harmful effects on the body’s endocrine (hormone) system.

Paraben’s can mimic Estrogen and studies have found the presence of paraben’s in tumours both cancerous and non cancerous. This doesn’t mean they caused the tumours and there isn’t a link to prove that they do, but there also isn’t any proof they didn’t.

I think big brands usually try to cash in on women’s fear so “Paraben Free” is something you will see quite often, making paraben’s more sinister than they have actually proved to be.

Doctors do worry about paraben’s having a cumulative effect so if you want to avoid them here is a list of brands that are paraben free:

Aveda (shop online or find a salon)

Bare Minerals* (http://www.bareminerals.co.uk)

Burt’s Bees (Burt’s Bees Natural Skin Care Products & Natural Personal Care Products)

Wake up looking awesome! (Well better at the very least).

Hey guys!

So I know we all want to wake up like Beyoncé (flawless) but some people (a.k.a me) wake up looking like there has been a small tornado in their room, this is not helpful when I need to get ready quickly or want to look pretty waking up at a friends house etc.

So I decided to give some actual thought into if there was anything I could do to change the outcome of “tornado” mornings here is what I did and I found it made a massive difference 🙂

– Ensure all makeup is removed from face so skin can breathe, you may think you will look better keeping makeup on at a significant others place but the reality is dry skin and panda eyes! Not to mention the break outs from clogging your pores for the whole night :/

– Brush hair, spray dry shampoo in the roots and put an oil such as Moroccan oil through your ends then put your hair in pigtail plaits, by doing this your roots will stay fresh you ends moisturised and hair knot free (not to mention the effortless wave you get when you take the plaits out 😉 )

-Sleep on your back??? Yes this is a strange one but apparently sleeping on your back prevents sleep lines, puffiness and pimples caused by keeping your face pressed against a pillow all night.

– Just before you go to sleep put a thick layer of Lanolips 101 ointment on your lips, this will act as a lip treatment so you don’t wake up with chapped dry lips.

– Groom eyebrows the night before, if your eye brows are in great shape they can add a lot of definition to the eyes without having to wear makeup

– Brush and floss teeth really well (don’t forget to scrape your tongue!) and follow up with whitening treatment or if you wear plates make sure you wear them to ensure your teeth are nice and straight, keep water by your bedside and sip through the night to avoid bad breath

– Avoid nicotine, alcohol and caffeine four hours before bedtime..well preferably avoid these things all the time but I’m trying to be realistic here.

– Last but certainly not least get an early night! Beauty sleep Is REAL..lack of sleep can cause skin to sag and lose it’s lustre as well as blood vessels dilating which causes dark circles, so get eight hours sleep if you can!

Let me know if this makes a difference to y’all! I also want to hear your tricks to waking up fresh 🙂

Have a great day xxx

Why is it SO important to remove makeup?!

Removing makeup is so incredibly important, and is actually a lot harder to do than most people expect. Even I am shocked at what lasts, I often try foundations on the back of my hand then proceed to test different cleansers to see if they remove it and it will always leave a decent amount, even when cleansing twice.

The reason why it is so important is our skin is covered in pores, this is where sweat comes out but also where we secrete sebum (a waxy liquid that helps protect and keep our skin moist) when it is secreted it pushes out irritants from the pores. When makeup is left on it inhibits this process by clogging the pores, sebum builds up behind it and this can create pimples. Leaving eye makeup on can also cause irritation, allergic reaction and even infections.

So! This is what I recommend to remove makeup properly. I say “properly” because using strong astringents or soaps that are not ph balanced can strip the skin of its natural oils, this cause the skin to produce more oil and therefore break out..yikes!

-Wet face with tepid water (not hot or cold this can cause unnecessary irritation)
– Rub a small amount of “CLEAR Pore Normalizing Cleanser” by Paula’s Choice between your hands then GENTLY in circular motions on the face.
– Wet “Select mircofibre face washer” ( available at woolworths) and gently rub on face in circular motion making sure to get right up into the hair line.
– Repeat step 2.
– Apply a small amount of “Skin Balancing Invisible Finishing Moisture Gel” by Paula’s Choice to finish.

Paula’s Choice is by far my favourite skin care, I will do a post on Paula Begoun soon. Also the “Woolworths Select face washers” are the best investment I have ever made, $1.99 for two! They are mircofibre and will take off every last bit of makeup without over scrubbing and even if you don’t have cleanser they remove it. Of course I think it’s more effective to use cleanser just to be sure. The first wash is to break down the makeup, the second (after using the washcloth) is just to make sure the pores are free of any dirt or oil. If you have problem skin this routine if done morning and night will most likely help a lot. As well as making sure you regularly change your pillow case because dirt and bacteria can grow on them.
