Yeezy Season..A look at fresh make-up.

Hey Guys!

As you all have probably heard, #kanyewest Launched his Yeezy Season 3 clothing line and new album #thelifeofpablo on the same day..at madison square garden. Major.

I adore his clothing but today i thought it would be nice to have a look at the make-up and hair (or lack there of) at his past three shows.

The make-up is extremely minimal, to the untrained eye i’m sure a lot of people assume there is zero make-up, and THAT is exactly why its so perfect. No doubt there is make-up but it is the type of no make-up look that suits the clothing perfectly.

The make-up is glowing, neutral, fresh and effortless the hair is either out and very natural or in some shows concealed completely. Its the ultimate “i woke up like this” look.

If you want to achieve this look, here are a few tips..

  1. Don’t use a full coverage foundation (if any) and leave imperfections such as freckles and beauty marks.
  2. Use a rich moisturiser before make-up application.
  3. Only use neutral matte shades on the face, no bright coloured brushes
  4. Opt for a light oil dabbed on the cheeks instead of a highlighter with pigment, the shimmer is an obvious make-up whereas oil will give you a natural glow.

If you want to see this look broken down further i’ve made a tutorial you can check out here:

The man behind Marilyn Monroe’s iconic make-up..tips and all!

Alan “Whitey” Snyder met Marilyn Monroe on her first screen test, you would assume it went amazingly considering he went on to be her one and only make-up artist, but surprisingly their first interaction was far from perfect. This was her first film test, so Marliyn insisted that Whitey do the same thick make-up application that she was used to for photoshoots.

Being a make-up artist you learn that even though something may look awful, you just have to do what the talent wants and let what they look like speak for itself and that is exactly what happened.

When they arrived on set the cinematographer shouted “Whitey, what the hell have you got on that face? We can’t photograph her that way! Take this girl downstairs, wash the damn stuff off, do her face the way you know it ought to be and bring her back up!”.

When Marilyn realised that Whitey knew best and let him do his job she was very impressed with how he made her look, not only that but they became trusted friends. Together they created her make-up look that included these few things that you may not have previously known:

1. Shading (contouring) under her cheek bones, Jaw line and down her nose as well as at the tip of her nose to make it appear smaller, He used both dark contouring colour and a flush of coral blush on her temples, nose and cheeks to add a youthful blush.

2. He used a thick layer of Vaseline as her primer (not something that would be able to withstand High Definition Cameras and Modern Lighting) but this created her gorgeous glow.

3. Shading and highlighting the lips with five different shades of lipsticks and lip liners some to create the illusion of bigger lips, starting by over drawing her lip shape with a much darker liner then filling this in.

4. Once her lipstick was applied he would add white powder to the centre of the bottom lip, adding further to the illusion of bigger lips.

5. Highlighter was used on top of cheek bones and in the centre of her face next to her nose to create glow

6. He used white eyeshadow and highlighter all over her eyelids, especially highlighting the inner corner.

7. He lined her eyes with a white eyeliner to make them appear bigger

8. Contrary to popular belief her signature winged liner was a brown pencil not a black liquid, this gave her the winged look but in a more natural way.

9. He used half strip false lashes only on the outer of her eyes to enhance her signature elongated eye.

10. A line was drawn under her lower lash line and extended out then blended to appear as though there was a shadow from her upper lashes, this made her lashes appear bigger.

11.  And of course to finish it all off he drew on her beauty mark with a dark brown eye liner.

Due to Marilyn’s high anxiety and nervousness like all make-up artists that work closely with talent he would also look after her mental needs, often stalling for hours because she wasn’t ready to face the set and knowing how the industry works he would have been the one to take the blame for this.

He taught Marilyn how to do her own make-up, travelled the world with her and was one of her closest friends he promised her that he would do her make-up if she were to ever die, a promise that he later kept.

After doing her make-up for the final time at the mortuary, he was a pallbearer at the funeral and although this story has a somewhat sad ending it shows his undying loyalty to the very end..and that speaks volumes about what beautiful people they both were.

Pictured below is a before and after of Marilyn, Marilyn’s signature make-up look and of course Marilyn and Whitey together.

How to get the best from your foundation!

Hey guys!

Now we have gone through this journey of finding your perfect foundation we need to ensure it’s applied in a way that will benefit you most!

There are many different ways of applying foundation the main ones being sponges, brushes and my personal favourite fingers. Fingers warm up the product and this gives a more natural look when it’s being applied, I also hate wasting product and I find that I go through foundation quicker because brushes and sponges absorb more. When it comes to my clients I use brushes because they are more hygienic than fingers. However I use my fingers for things such as concealer (just remember If you are going to use your fingers always have freshly washed hands and use hand sanitiser immediately before touching someone’s face!)

In this video I am going to take you through the most popular foundation tools and give you an easy intro on how to use them, I have written a description down below but there is more detail in the video and it helps to see the techniques 🙂

Fingers-

– Put foundation on back of hand pat your fingers into foundation
– Dab foundation onto the face in areas you most need it (not blending)
– Use your fingers to massage this in almost like a moisturiser
– Feather out at edges, less is more I try and put only minimal to no foundation on places where I don’t need coverage.

Sponge –

If you are using a sponge like the popular Beauty Blender be sure it’s damp, this is the way it was designed to be used and will absorb to much product if it’s not.

– Dampen sponge (not so it’s dripping just so it’s nice and fat 🙂 )
– Put foundation of back of hand
– Dip your sponge in foundation and stipple onto face, stipple is a makeup term that basically means bouncing softly onto the face (definitely see video for this one)

The flat foundation brush-

– Put foundation on back of hand
– Dip in foundation (do not over load the brush)
– Brush onto face starting at the centre of the face
– Feather it out at the hair line to avoid streaks
– Blend in with fingers or pat over with brush (technique in video)

Kabuki Brushes –

If applying mineral powder foundation you want to use a kabuki brush. Kabuki brushes are more dense than normal powder brushes therefore they pick up more product so when applied it’s gives better coverage

Buffing brushes/fibre optic brushes –

If you have been doing these techniques with these tools and are not happy with the result and the makeup is still sitting on your skin you can use brushes like these ones to buff over the foundation once applied.

Thanks for reading/watching! I hope you guys enjoyed the foundation series, please be sure to subscribe to my youtube channel ” Katy Clucas ” for more videos 🙂

An interview with Richard Kavanagh author of ‘Love Your Hair’. MUST READ!

This is no ordinary hair book, these hair styles are super cool yet classic. The concept of the book is what makes it so unique, it is essentially a recipe book for hair. For every hair style there is easy to follow recipes. Including ‘Ingredients’ and ‘Time required’! Super cute and handy if you ask me. Not to mention the amazing step by step photos (shot by Stephen Chee) that make it feel like your are flipping through a high fashion magazine.

Firstly I would just like to say your book ‘Love Your Hair’ is so awesome, I had the privilege of working with you on one of the days of shooting for it and I fell in love with it before it was even printed.

Katy: What inspired you to write this book?

Richard: I love being witness to that moment when someone sees themselves and a little bit of happiness flows through them because they like what they see. Doing hair, you get to see that moment and it always gives me a buzz. I was researching for a regular spot on morning television, where i was showcasing the key trends from runways of the world and how they could be translated into wearable styles. The spot was popular and the network wanted me to do more than we originally planned for so i needed more content. I emailed a bunch of girls asking them what they’d hope to find if they found a book on a girlfriends coffee table that would help them with their hair. A couple people emailed back asking where they could get the book, so i thought maybe i better write it…

K: Seems like a good reason to write a book 🙂 What are the top products or tools you simply could not work without?

R: My blowdryer, Mason Pearson brush, a curling iron, some Redken forceful, my Redken dry shampoo and my wool shake.

K: So who did you look up to when you first got into hair dressing?

R: The first seminar i went to was with a guy called Richard Kownacki. He talked about cowlicks and working with the individuals hair. I really admired what he had to say, the way he said it, and the thought process behind it. india miller, of douse vidal sassoon, and i was always inspired by the incredible jon sahag. not only for the work he did but also for the way he created the career he wanted…

What advice would you give the everyday girl? (other than buy ‘Love Your Hair’ that’s a given 😉 )

i would say the first thing to do is work out what sort of hair you have. is it thick, or coarse, fine or thin? that way you’ll be able to work out what works for your hair and what won;t work for your hair…
What was your all time favourite job? “
it;s hard to pick between the first time i did the prada show, the first time i did italian vogue and working with kelly osborne… each were super fun and exciting in their own unique way…

What mistakes do girls make with their hair that makes you cringe?

i think sometimes girls try too hard with their hair. they can sometimes overcomplicate a simple idea and it ends up looking trite or contrived. i love it when a girl’s hair looks effortless (even though i know how much work went into it). i like it when a girl owns her hairstyle. it makes me cringe when i see someone that looks uncomfortable in their look…

Thank you so much for being so generous with your information..readers I recommend you give ‘love your hair’ a good read..keep it on hand at all times to avoid bad hair days 😉
