Make-up shaming..the ugly side of being a beauty lover.

Makeup shaming is making someone feel bad or guilty for wearing or enjoying makeup. Typically women are judged for trying too hard, or not trying hard can we win!?

Society sets impossible beauty standards for women, these standards have been heightened in recent times with social media. The perfection that was once so distant in glossy magazines, now seems normal with thousands of amazingly beautiful women given the platform to be seen. But what if (god forbid) you don’t “wake up like dissss”?

Lately trends have been praising ‘natural beauty’ and this is fantastic..if you are a natural beauty. The women that are lucky enough to be born this way or rich enough to become this way are seen as wholesome, less shallow and more “honest” by both men and women.

Leaving women that wear a little make-up (or a lot, you do you gurl or boy 😉 ) perceived as people that are high maintenance and insecure. We feel bad if we don’t fit the definition of typical beauty and guilty if we try to meet these same expectations.

In two minutes i can pop on some mascara and concealer and feel 1000% better about myself. Then BAM a comment from a family member or friend “you’re putting mascara on?! but we are just going to the shops” or the “You don’t need any make-up, you look fineee”. Yes i know i look fine, but quite frankly i can look better so I’m going to.

Whether we like it or not humans are judged based on appearances, first impressions are often visual. Make-up can provide an even skin tone to a person that suffers from severe acne, instead of them staying at home feeling depressed it frees them to in fact be themselves and have confidence.

One of the main trends that comes up on the subject of make-up shaming is pictures of women before and after make-up (examples below) posted by men with the comments “this is why i have trust issues” or “this is why you take a female swimming on your first date”. What these men don’t understand is “this” is not for you..and as one very eloquent and anonymous woman put it “I don’t see why i’m being blamed for a man being stupid enough to think i have sparkly gold eyelids”.

Make-up is not worn to trick or lie to people, it does however give many people the chance to be their true self that isn’t held back by the fear of being judged on a visual first impression. It creates an equal chance for their inner beauty to be seen.

So the moral of the story is, if you have been make-up shamed..screw the haters. Do what makes YOU happy and confident, if someone judges you thats their problem not yours.

On the other hand if you have make-up shamed or judged..SCREW YOU!..just kidding.  What i meant to say was next time you go to judge someone take into consideration that wearing make-up doesn’t harm anyone,  if it makes someone happy then you should encourage them to be their best selves.

What are Paraben’s?!

Hey guys!

I always have clients asking me what are Paraben’s? so i thought i would share with you what i know..

Paraben’s are a controversial preservative used in cosmetics, they prevent the growth of bacteria and are easily absorbed into the skin.

Paraben’s are controversial because they are suspected of being “Endocrine Disruptors” these are chemicals that can have harmful effects on the body’s endocrine (hormone) system.

Paraben’s can mimic Estrogen and studies have found the presence of paraben’s in tumours both cancerous and non cancerous. This doesn’t mean they caused the tumours and there isn’t a link to prove that they do, but there also isn’t any proof they didn’t.

I think big brands usually try to cash in on women’s fear so “Paraben Free” is something you will see quite often, making paraben’s more sinister than they have actually proved to be.

Doctors do worry about paraben’s having a cumulative effect so if you want to avoid them here is a list of brands that are paraben free:

Aveda (shop online or find a salon)

Bare Minerals* (

Burt’s Bees (Burt’s Bees Natural Skin Care Products & Natural Personal Care Products)

Dr. Hauschka (Dr. Hauschka Skin Care)

John Masters Organics (Natural hair, skin and body care products)

Josie Maran Cosmetics (Argan Oil and Natural, Eco-Friendly Skincare)

Tarte (

Korres (KORRES Modern Greek Apothecary – products formulated with nature’s most powerful ingredients. – Clone – Clone)

Origins (Homepage)

Pangea Organics (Home)

If you ever wondered what Paraben’s were i hope this helped 🙂

Make-up that guys hate!

Sometimes boys like to think we wake up perfect, never use the bathroom and always smell like flowers..and although none of this is true, i think this is where their dislike for certain types of make-up comes from..

Its not that guy’s hate make-up, its that good make-up should be undetectable..if make-up is really obvious guys can sometimes feel deceived by that..

Obviously this is a generalisation but this blog is about the guys that don’t like make-up and prefer a “natural” i am sharing with you the main things guys seem to have in common of what they dislike..

  1. Less is more, to much of any kind of make-up is enough to make a guy notice..for example a direct quote from a real life man “Too much blush… Clown face” Thanks Julien!
  2. Obvious and bright lipsticks, in saying this i did hear mixed feed back, a lot of guys seem to love these colours right up until the point of kissing the girl..although there would always be the catch “as long as she wears it with confidence” ugh.
  3. Sticky lip gloss, again its all about them..boys don’t want lip gloss on their lips, cheeks or necks 😉
  4. Not to matte, translation..if a girl wears to much powder with none of natural skin shining though its a dead make-up give away.
  5. Neck a different colour to your body..well its not only men that hate this look, finding a foundation shade to match you perfectly can be tricky, always check your foundation in SUPER natural light!
  6. Glitter because what could be more fake looking, plus it gets everywhere..but. but. it’s so fun!
  7. “When girls face’s look like their face is melting”..another direct quote from a much foundation that has not been set with a light powder..tip: if you’re going somewhere hot and you know you’ll sweat take blotting paper to avoid looking greasy.
  8. Contouring or as i read one guys explanation of it ‘two brown/orange stripes,on the sides of the face’ if contouring is done badly (which is easy to do) then it can be one of the most obvious types of hate worthy make-up.

Those examples are why guys hate make-up that the girl is wearing..but even if he does love your makeup..and by love i mean not notice and just thinks you’re really pretty..he may dislike in these other ways..

  1. It stains his sheets and clothes (this goes for fake tan too!)
  2. They feel like they are being mislead if a girl looks dramatically different without make-up on
  3. The time it takes a girl to apply make-up may cause them to be late/bored
  4. If you share finances they can be frustrated at the amount of money it costs.

I don’t believe you should ever change make-up you love for a man..but thought this may give y’all a little perspective..

Check out my video below to see top tips for make-up that guys actually like!

Yeezy Season..A look at fresh make-up.

Hey Guys!

As you all have probably heard, #kanyewest Launched his Yeezy Season 3 clothing line and new album #thelifeofpablo on the same madison square garden. Major.

I adore his clothing but today i thought it would be nice to have a look at the make-up and hair (or lack there of) at his past three shows.

The make-up is extremely minimal, to the untrained eye i’m sure a lot of people assume there is zero make-up, and THAT is exactly why its so perfect. No doubt there is make-up but it is the type of no make-up look that suits the clothing perfectly.

The make-up is glowing, neutral, fresh and effortless the hair is either out and very natural or in some shows concealed completely. Its the ultimate “i woke up like this” look.

If you want to achieve this look, here are a few tips..

  1. Don’t use a full coverage foundation (if any) and leave imperfections such as freckles and beauty marks.
  2. Use a rich moisturiser before make-up application.
  3. Only use neutral matte shades on the face, no bright coloured brushes
  4. Opt for a light oil dabbed on the cheeks instead of a highlighter with pigment, the shimmer is an obvious make-up whereas oil will give you a natural glow.
